Anyone suffering from pain is also very grateful for quick help. A current study now provides information about the position in which the pharmaceuticals work particularly quickly and efficiently.

Key role of body position

When pain arises, taking medication is usually the quickest and easiest way to solve the problem. A study has now investigated this question.

Posture plays a crucial role here.

On this subject, scientists at Johns Hopkins University studied the mechanics of drug dissolution in the human body. More precisely, the researchers questioned how quickly the body absorbs the pharmaceuticals. At the same time, the scientists checked in which position the drug dissolution works most efficiently.

way of medicines through the body

In order to find an answer to this question, the physicians simulated the dissolution of the drugs in the human stomach.
From this organ, the active ingredient in most tablets automatically passes into the intestine. After the intestine has absorbed the active ingredient, the pain is relieved.

This is how drug dissolution works

Regarding the speed of drug dissolution in the body, the representatives of the university emphasize that the effect of most tablets only begins when the stomach passes its contents directly into the intestine. The closer the pharmaceuticals are to the so-called antrum – the lower part of the stomach – the faster they dissolve. The antrum then empties the contents directly into the duodenum via the pylorus.

In addition, the scientists examined various postures.

This research found that pills work fastest and most efficiently when people take the medication lying on their right side. In particular, the alignment of the body in a lying position plays a crucial role here.

The most advantageous body position

In a lying position on the right side, the medicine reaches the deepest areas of the stomach within a short time, so that it can then be processed further. In an upright position, a tablet needs a maximum of 23 minutes to unfold its positive health effect. This time estimate is reduced to just ten minutes for people lying on the right.

If a person lies on the left side when taking the medication, those affected have to expect an effect within 100 minutes. The researchers assess so-called gastric contractions, gravity and gastric juice flow as the decisive components. This combination works particularly effectively with people lying on their right side. For bedridden, sitting or elderly people, their lying position is therefore of crucial importance.
